Municipal Courses in New York City
Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx was the first municipal golf course in the United States opening in 1895. Originally opened as a nine hole course, the overwhelming popularity led to the expansion to eighteen holes in 1899. Golf writer H.B. Martin called Van Courtlandt Park the recruiting ground for golf. Van Courtlandt was one of the most prominent courses frequented by prominent figures more than any other course. In April 1921 the course opened earlier than ever sending three hundred golfers off for their first round of the year.
In the spring of 1914 they added an additional eighteen holes at Van Cortlandt Park named the Moshulu Links.
